The Nisenan have inhabited this land for many thousands of years before the onset of the Gold Rush, the statehood of California and the creation of Nevada County. Tribal Chairman Richard Johnson’s book details the tribes customs, lifestyle, tools, entertainment & homes. Additionally, he writes of the difficulty maintaining the customs/culture of the tribe, the illegal termination of the tribes federal status & the loss of their Nevada City Rancheria land.

"California’s Nevada County has been the home of one Nisenan Tribe for many thousands of years. Tribal Chairman Richard Johnson writes about the tribe into which he was born, presenting new and old information from multiple sources—including hundreds of documents from national, state and municipal archives, contemporary newspapers, and tribal elders. Until now information about the Nisenan people was widely scattered, with only bits and pieces being recorded. Never before has such a comprehensive work been assembled by the living members of a unique American tribe." -David Comstock/Comstock Bonanza Press
